I personally feel a post interview thank you email is fine, rather than mailing a hand written letter. This is my opinion, and I recognize other people disagree, and would point out a hand written job interview thank you letter shows even more effort, which I accept it does. I personally think it usually is a little to formal, or old fashioned for our modern days.
My own suggestion is mail your interviewer a post job interview thank you email, on the evening of your job interview, so that it can be awaiting them within their in box first thing following morning.
