Rafael Sabatini Books: A Favorite Choice With Readers For Longer Than A 100 Years
The Rafael Sabatini books have been a popular selection among readers for more than a hundred years, and also continue to be popular amongst modern avid adventure readers. Sabatini's following was loyal and considerable, since the reading public was well aware of the fact that in picking up one of several Rafael Sabatini books, they could always count upon an exciting adventure book and a good read.
Rafael Sabatini, an Italian/British writer of novels of romance and adventure, was given birth to in Jesi, Italy, in 1875 to an English mother and Italian father, and Sabatini died in 1950 in Switzerland. Rafael Sabatini started to write short stories in the 1890s, and his first book was published in 1902. It took him nearly 25 years of effort before he obtained success with the brilliant novel Scaramouche in 1921. Scaramouche, which relates to the French Revolution, soon became an international best-seller. In 1922, Scaramouche was followed by the equally successful buccaneering adventure novel, Captain Blood.
The success of these two books had the consequence that all of his earlier books were rushed straight into reprints, the most popular of which was The Sea Hawk, published in 1915. Sabatini was such a prolific writer that he wrote a new book nearly each year. Whilst his subsequent works perhaps did not accomplish the massive success of Scaramouche and Captain Blood, nonetheless Sabatini still maintained a lot of popularity with the reading public through the decades that followed. Throughout the 1940s, illness forced this prolific author to lessen the pace of his writing, however, he continued to write, and composed a number of additional works during this time.
Rafael Sabatini is best known for the subsequent worldwide bestselling novels:
1. The Sea Hawk (published in 1915), a story of the Spanish Armada and the pirates of the Barbary Coast;
2. Scaramouche (released in 1921), a tale of the French Revolution in which a fugitive hides out in a commedia dell'arte troupe and later turns into a fencing master;
3. Captain Blood (published in 1922), in which the title character becomes admiral of a fleet of pirate ships; as well as
4. Bellarion the Fortunate (published in 1926), about a cunning young male who finds himself immersed in the politics of fifteenth-century Italy.
A number of the Rafael Sabatini books have been made into notable movies; some in the silent movie era, and others during the sound era. Rafael Sabatini is buried at Adelboden in Switzerland, and on his grave's headstone his wife had written something equivalent to: "He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad".
